Syllabus for PH1600
Summer 2008
Introduction to Astronomy

This is an online course only. As such, this class never meets in person. Course lectures can be downloaded from the course web site, or iTunes University. Class tests will be taken over the web through Blackboard learning system. Course lectures will be playable on any computer with an iTunes interface, a video iPod, or any cell phone capable of playing .mp3 files. Online Question hour will be made available along side of the lectures.

All students must be registered through Blackboard. There will be one midterm test and a final exam. All tests will be administered online. When initially logging onto Blackboard learning system, students will be advised that cheating is unacceptable and students suspected of cheating will be brought before the honor board of the university. If found guilty, a student may fail the course.

Lectures are released every Monday at 8 am. Students are not required to have read the appropriate book chapter before viewing the online lecture, but it is strongly advised to do so. A short lecture on a week's worth of Astronomy Pictures of the Day (APOD) from Fall 2007 will also be made available online every Monday along with the lectures. Students are responsible for APOD and book material. If students have questions after listening to the online lecture, they should participate in the online questions hour (Fridays) or submit email questions about the material to ph1600@mtu.edu .

Homework quizzes will be released every Wednesday 8 AM (see calendar) and will be due the following Wednesday 8 AM. Unless otherwise specified, all the quizzes and exams will be released at 8 AM and will be available online for one full week.
