Graduate Programs - Physics - 1. Overview - Fields of Research

Structure of Solids and Clusters, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Nanostructures and Nanophase Materials, Defects and Interfaces in Materials, Aerospace and Electronic Materials, Atom Interferometry, Atmospheric and Environmental Remote Sensing, Wave Propagation in Random Media, Hyperspectral Imaging and Instrumentation, Astrophysics of Close Binary Star Systems, Extra-Solar Planetary System Detection, Planetary Atmospheres.

Research Assistantships are currently available or anticipated in

  1. experimental and theoretical astrophysics, including gamma-ray burst astronomy, relativistic gravitational micro-lensing, deep circumstellar imaging with emphasis on extra-solar planet detection, optical design of hyperspectral imaging systems, and observational astrophysics of eclipsing binary stars,
  2. atmospheric science, with an emphasis on fluctuation phenomena in radar meteorology and cloud physics,
  3. ab initio calculations of properties of transition and rare earth atoms using relativistic configuration interaction methods, and
  4. laser spectroscopy, processes in weakly ionized plasmas, atom interferometry and nanofabrication of diffractive optics.
