Course Description:
Project-oriented introduction to scientific instrument design and machine shop techniques. The course introduces proper use and application of shop machinery including lathe, drill press, band saw, mill, torch, and woodworking tools. Instrument design, bench layout, and drafting standards are included as well as laboratory safety training.
Prerequisite: Graduate standing and permission of the instructor.

Lab Fee: $100

Typical Syllabus: two class meetings per week, two hours per meeting

    Week 1. Machine Shope and Laboratory Safety
    Weeks 2-3. Lathe
    Weeks 4-7. Vertical Band Saw, Belt Sander, Horizontal Band Saw
    Weeks 8-9. Mill
    Weeks 9-10. Bench Layout and Drafting Standards
